Netiquette IQ Blog Of 11/19/16 - Leaf-Spine Networks

Leaf-Spine
Leaf-spine is a two-layer data center network topology that's useful for data centers that experience more east-west network traffic than north-south traffic. Basically, this topology augments the spine-layer with more switches to handle traffic within the data center. Servers and storage connect to leaf switches and leaf switches connect to spine switches. Leaf switches mesh into the spine, forming the access layer that delivers network connection points for servers. Spine switches have high port density and form the core of the architecture.
Every leaf switch in a leaf-spine architecture connects to every switch in the network fabric. No matter which leaf switch a server is connected to, it has to cross the same number of devices every time it connects to another server. (The only exception is when the other server is on the same leaf.) This minimizes latency and bottlenecks because each payload only has to travel to a spine switch and another leaf switch to reach its endpoint.

A leaf-spine topology can be layer 2 or layer 3 depending upon whether the links between the leaf and spine layer will be switched or routed. In a layer 2 leaf-spine design, Transparent Interconnection of Lots of Links (TRILL) or shortest path bridging takes the place of spanning-tree. All hosts are linked to the fabric and offer a loop-free route to their Ethernet MAC address through a shortest-path-first computation. In a layer 3 design, each link is routed. This approach is most efficient when virtual local area networks are sequestered to individual leaf switches or when a network overlay, like VXLAN, is working.

Netiquette IQ Blog Of 11/18/16 - Keeping And Using Email Templates

The following is an excerpt from my book, Netiquette IQ . How many times do you type the same or similar content? Also how many times do we copy an email from one person or another and later discover we should not have included something.

We all want to reduce our time spent with emails but we also want to preserve their quality and personalization as well. So here is what I hope you will agree, is a snippet of sage advice.

Good Netiquette to All!
----------------------------------------------------------

Keeping Email Templates

As is well known, more and more emails are being written and delivered by the day. Since the limits of Netiquette can often be strained from an individual’s or company’s policy, there are some actions to assist with catching up with email or avoiding mail-box backlog. One such method is to compose a series of templates. One example would be similar to an “out of office” automatic reply for business; another would be informal.
In essence, this process enables a user to have some time to catch up to their accumulated messages and giving the original sender due consideration.

Bad out-of-office example:
I’m out of the office and on vacation.
For urgent issues, please contact Jerry at support@trs.net or 888-123-4567.  I’ll address all other inquires when I return.

Good out-of-office example:
Thank you for your message. I am currently out of the office with limited access to email. I will be returning on Friday, April[JL1]  15. If you need assistance before then, you may reach me at 555-123-4567. For urgent issues, please contact Ralph at support@trs.net or 888-123-4567.

Thank you,

Gilbert Smith

Some ideas for a template might be sales, peak season periods, e.g., April 15, or after major events. Some other popular reply templates might include the following:
1)                              Information request
2)                              Status request
3)                              Employment request
4)                              Directions or logistics
5)                              Long term appointment or meeting
6)                              Multiple part questions
7)                              Seasonal request
8)                              Confirmation of goods or services received
9)                              Referral to or for someone
10)                             Membership or subscription information
11)                             Request for quotation (RFQ)
As much as personalized templates can assist with replying to emails and maintain a good Netiquette flow, they should never be considered as a preferred form of communication with more-important recipients.

Netiquette IQ Blog Of 11/16/16 - Netiquette Creativity

Many people associate Netiquette with traditional etiquette, with strict rules, stuffiness and usually seriously practiced by the very rich. Well, this concept is completely wrong except in regard to core principles, another topic altogether.

Netiquette may have some strict rules but it adaptable to social media, more modernized methods of communication and contemporary content.

Below is a section of my Netiquette book for job seekers, noted below which discusses Netiquette creativity.

Good Netiquette to all!

=================================
Netiquette Creativity – the potential differentiator
“You never get a second chance to make a first impression.”
—Will Rogers

Are business Netiquette and creativity mutually exclusive?  Are they partners by necessity?  Can they be combined to offer a stronger, more effective means of successful communication for the job seeker which result in more email opens, reads, interviews and the new job?

The answers to the above questions is that email Netiquette and creativity are not only complimentary, but combined they offer a stronger and more effective vehicle for achieving your employment objectives.  When any recipient receives an email, we all know that an appropriate personalization adds a layer of acceptance, i.e., the following salutations:

            Dear Dale Carnegie – wrong
            Dear Carnegie – very wrong
            Dear Mr. Carnegie – correct

The need to capture attention

Today’s job market is crowded, shifting demographically and, because of growing technology, inundated with résumés.  It is not uncommon to have hundreds of emails/résumés sent for a single job opening.  It is no longer enough to have a thoughtful, well designed and content-rich cover letter/résumé.  There is often a need for embellishments and enhancements to job seeker’s email to capture the recruiter’s /hiring manager’s attention beyond the 3-8 second interval for which many documents are given.  It really isn’t a strict set of rules for using creativity on your job search emails, it is more a question of when, where and to whom to do this.

In order to increase the opens, reads and sustained attention of the recipient, there are many items you can introduce into your email to distinguish it from others.  This, together with a strong Netiquette foundation will bring you to the level of a “Netiquette IQ One Percenter.” In achieving this, you will most assuredly accomplish your asserted goal of having your résumé opened and read.

Netiquette IQ Blog Of 11/14/16 - Compensating Control

Compensating Control

A compensating control, also called an alternative control, is a mechanism that is put in place to satisfy the requirement for a security measure that is deemed too difficult or impractical to implement at the present time.

In the payment card industry, compensating controls were introduced in Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) to give organizations an alternative to security requirements that could not be met due to legitimate technological or business constraints. According to the PCI Council, compensatory controls must:
1) Meet the intent and rigor of the original stated requirement;
2) Provide a similar level of defense as the original requirement;
3) Be "above and beyond" other requirements (not simply in compliance with other requirements); and
4) Be commensurate with the additional risk imposed by not adhering to the original stated requirement.
Examples of compensating controls for information technology security include:
Segregation of Duties (SoD) - an internal control designed to prevent error and fraud by ensuring that at least two individuals are responsible for the separate parts of any task. Fraud and error are risks in payroll management. To mitigate that risk, a company might have one employee responsible for the accounting portion of the job and another responsible for signing the checks. However, segregation of duties can be difficult for businesses with small staffs. Compensating controls, in this case, might include maintaining and reviewing logs and audit trails.
Encryption - converting all electronic data into ciphertext and changing cryptographic keys periodically can be difficult and expensive to implement. As is frequently the case, multiple compensating controls may be required to provide security that is equivalent to the control being replaced. Compensating controls in lieu of comprehensive data encryption might include the use of database security applications and services, network access control (NAC), data leak prevention strategies and e-mail encryption.
