Netiquette For Ecards - Happy Valentine's Day

 It's holiday time for many around the world. Sending ecards for many is something they feel awkward about doing. Others would much rather receive a personalized greeting. Nonetheless, ecards do give you the capability to send many cards which was impossible just a few years ago. The article below, taken from my book, discusses some of the downsides and solutions.

Happy Valentine's Day and Peace for all throughout the world!
=====================================
==========================================
One of the major downsides of ecards is that security can be compromised: when someone purchases an ecard, he or she is providing information to the seller, or third party. One of the more extreme examples of this is that the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) is suspended to allow sites to accept a child’s ecard request and addresses without parental permission, as would normally be the case. There are also countless scams involving ecards, which can mislead children or people of any age. It is almost too much to ask certain people to have the discipline not to open ecards.
While there is much positive impact associated with ecards, as has been discussed, the negative issues, particularly many of the most significant ones, can have, more often, negative effects. After all, far more people would rather have a real or, at the very least, personalized ecard.

For those who will steadfastly refuse to open an ecard, there may very well be times when a legitimate message goes unopened—still another negative outcome. This can end up with an effect such as having the recipient feel disappointment that he or she did not receive a greeting or invitation by someone he or she was expecting to hear from. What is a good solution? There are some very popular ecard providers. If you want to use trusted sources of ecards, go to either www.jacquielawson.com or www.care2.com/ecards

Netiquette IQ Technical Term - Gravity Wave - Do you Really Know What It Is?

Gravity Wave (or gravitational wave) from whatis.com

A gravity wave (or gravitational wave) is a ripple in the curvature of the space-time continuum (the enmeshed combination of our three perceived physical dimensions, plus time) created by the movement of matter
Long thought to exist before they were detected, gravity waves were first hypothesized in Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, which predicted that an accelerating mass would radiate gravitational waves as it lost energy. For example, it would be expected that two pulsars (celestial bodies that emit radiation in regular pulses) in orbit around each other should emanate gravity waves as their orbits decay. In accordance with the first law of thermodynamics, which states that neither matter nor energy can be created or destroyed although either may be transformed, the energy loss associated with the orbit's decay is radiated as gravitational waves. According to theory, gravity waves propagate at approximately the speed of light and pass through matter unchanged, alternately stretching and shrinking distances on an infinitesimal scale. Their strength decreases as a function of distance from their source. The study of gravitational waves could yield an incredible amount of information about the universe and lead to many practical applications. For example, their ability to pass through matter unaltered could enable the transmission of a signal over vast distances in space.
Around the world, several countries have constructed gravity wave detectors, highly sensitive instruments designed to detect gravity waves and identify their sources. In the United States, the detector project is called LIGO (for Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory). LIGO researchers have been working to establish the existence of gravitational waves and prove whether or not they actually propagate at the speed of light and cause the displacement of matter that they pass through.
The LIGO system consists of suspended weights with mirrored surfaces that can move freely horizontally. If a gravitational wave passes through, the distance between the weights (which is measured by a laser beam moving back and forth between the mirrors and then recombined at a photodetector) is altered. The LIGO project uses the resources of volunteered personal computers collaborating through distributed computing. PC users can download the software from LIGO; the project is called Einstein@home.
On February 11, 2016, David Reitze, executive director of LIGO reported that researchers had detected gravitational waves.  Reitze said the waves were created by the merging of two black holes, one of which had the mass of 29 suns and the other 36.
Researchers from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed a LIGO prototype sensitive enough to detect a tiny movement (many times smaller than the diameter of a single hair) in a test weight 40 meters away. Other gravitational wave detection projects include a collaborative effort by France and Italy called VIRGO, another by Germany and Great Britain called GEO 600, a project in Japan called TAMA 300, one in Australia called ACIGA, and NASA's LISA project.

Netiquette IQ Blog Of 2/12/2016 - Watch Out, Feds Eye the 'Internet of Things' as Next Frontier in Spying

The article below left me with a variety of increased concerns. Items such as personal, national privacy will all become far more threatened by the IoT than most netizens realize. The encryption that some companies are now doing and the the ability to set up personal data and communication encryption are soon to become dwarfed by what will be inherent weak and vulnerable security. Additionally, it will become harder to understand where these weknesses are most pronounced.

Again as netizens, we all must realize where these gaps are to protect ourselves, our environment, the economy and our country!

Feds Eye the 'Internet of Things' as Next Frontier in Spying
FEBRUARY 10, 2016 12:37PM EST
James Clapper this week acknowledged that agencies may use smart household devices to increase surveillance efforts.
 Be careful what you say around your home appliances: devices connected to the Internet of Things might be spying on you.
U.S. intelligence chief James Clapper told the Senate Armed Services Committee this week that "intelligence services might use the IoT for identification, surveillance, monitoring, location tracking, and targeting for recruitment, or to gain access to networks or user credentials."
The comment was part of a larger report titled "Worldwide Threat Assessment of the US Intelligence Community," which also pointed to virtual and augmented reality and artificial intelligence as potential global threats.
"Devices, designed and fielded with minimal security requirements and testing, and an ever-increasing complexity of networks could lead to widespread vulnerabilities in civilian infrastructures and US Government systems," he wrote. "These developments will pose challenges to our cyber defenses and operational tradecraft but also create new opportunities for our own intelligence collectors."
As it relates to the IoT, Clapper acknowedged that smart devices "are improving efficiency, energy conservation, and convenience." But there are trade-offs, as "many of these new systems can threaten data privacy, data integrity, or continuity of services.
"The consequences of innovation and increased reliance on information technology in the next few years … will probably be far greater in scope and impact than ever," Clapper told the Senate.
 Government access to the gadgets of U.S. citizens has been a hot-button issue lately, ever since Apple and Google said they would encrypt their mobile operating systems by default. The feds, particularly the FBI, complained that the move makes it harder to root out terrorists who communicate via iOS or Android devices.
recent Harvard report, however, suggests otherwise. Encryption doesn't mean the Web goes "dark" for investigators, researchers found. On the contrary, it creates "pockets of dimness" while opening up other avenues for spying—like the IoT.
Clapper's statement, meanwhile, comes as the White House this week requested $19 billion for cybersecurity as part of President Obama's fiscal 2017 budget proposal. "Criminals, terrorists, and countries that wish to do us harm have realized that attacking us online is often easier than physically attacking us in person," Cybersecurity Coordinator Michael Daniel wrote in a blog post. "And with more and more sensitive data being stored online, the consequences of those cyber incidents are only growing more significant."
