Even Résumés Should Employ the Principle of Netiquette


Many job applicants do not equate sending a résumé with the need to use Netiquette. Keep in mind the need to balance items such as tone, fonts, and content with your email and other forms of electronic communication . These should be made complementary. Remember that a résumé should deliver upon all that is mentioned in the introductory email. If they are not balanced, the recipient might react negatively and lose the interest or enthusiasm that compelled him or her to read your email and open your résumé in the first place. Here are some basic Netiquette rules for the cohesion of your cover email and your résumé:

1.   Keep font styles and attributes (e.g., size, weight, etc.) identical.
2.   Have the same contact information.
3.   Don’t repeat words often.
4.   Show the same tone and enthusiasm throughout your communication.
Maintain the same formatting. Many recruiting managers will assume, even if subconsciously, that you have a positive attitude when they see consistency.

1.   Stay true to your code of ethics.
2.   Set realistic goals and use your Netiquette skills to present them when necessary
4.   Do not discuss any items related to gender in your emails or interviews.
5.   Be proactive with seeking employment.
6.   Keep the information displayed on your social media in synch with your résumé, and make a reference to all sites you have joined in your email signature.
7.   Maintain patience with your job search process. Even with NQS, there is time overhead to consider. Moreover, the hiring process time for many companies has grown longer that it was pre-2008.
8.   Show recognition that the recruiter/hiring manager is in a difficult and highly responsible position.
9.   Try to emphasize your knowledge of all job-related skills, experiences, technologies and any other potential attributes.
10.        Welcome difficult questions.
11.        Offer to share personal timelines, marketing plans, or anything that will help to suggest that your learning and adjustment times will be minimal.
12.        If you have knowledge of any successful women in the organization, mention and compliment them.

Netiquette Core Generational Words - They Are Important! A Blog From Netiquette IQ

 In any electronic communications, there usually emerge subtleties which can make a difference in the way an email or message is perceived by the recipient. A key to understanding this and the negative effect just a few words can convey is to be ware of generational words and phrases. In my forthcoming book, noted below, I elaborate on this extensively.

One of the key areas that this is important is with job seeking and the older candidate. One of my theories is that it isn't always a person's age that employers are concerned about, it is whether a person will simply fit in. This image can be formed by words that people use.

Including the fact that you have a code of ethics in an employment email makes for a really compelling statement. This will usually be a positive. Be prudent in mentioning it.
According to the bureau of Age Statistics, 20 percent of the US workforce is over the age of fifty-five. In many cases, when someone younger is hired, it isn’t the recruiter or hiring manager who doesn’t want to hire you; it is often due to there being a concern of your fitting in and group chemistry. Good Netiquette encourages learning the vernacular of the industry, technology and company, and learning about generations younger than your own. A few select words in your communications can convey the tone of viability to be a positive and valuable asset in your job.
